“She’s brain dead. They found no activity. She’s gone and her body doesn’t know it.”
“Aw fuck… Has he been presented with the decision? How’s he taking it?”
“He knows she’s gone. He’s thinking about what’s best for the boy.”
“Does the family agree? It’s his decision, but she’s their mom and daughter.”
“Surprisingly he’s listening to advice and making alert decisions. He’s as ready as he can be to let her go… God that’s awful to say. But the people who have been there from the beginning have come to terms and agree. It’s the late comers, her siblings, that are still wrapping themselves around the idea. He’s going to give it 24-48 hours.. then…”
“How the hell did this happen?”
……
“Hello God. Its me again. Comfort, help them please.”
“She’s still here. But it’s not good. They gathered the family for a meeting.”
“What? The results bad?”
“Yeah… and her liver shut down.”
“Aw shit…”
……….
“God, why? Wendy wake up!
“She made it through the night. Her blood count is coming up. Still no response from her though.”
“I heard they were going to do a EEG and put her on dialysis.”
“Yep.. Dad fed and changed Baby Boy’s diapers today. Kid just smiled, burped, and then went back to sleep. He’s so much larger than any of the other babies in NICU. It’s kinda funny to see.”
“If you … call.”
“Same.”
………….
“Oh God, help. Wendy wake up for this baby boy, he needs you and so does Dad.”
“The family is all here.”
“How’s it going?”
“Baby boy is fine. He’s the cutest. He’s a big 7lbs 14 oz. Good set of lungs too. They let me hold him for a while.”
“How’s Mom?”
“She lost kidney function. But she’s not bleeding as much. Oh, she raised her arms. We took a few pictures of her and the baby.”
“You know how much she hates that. If that doesn’t wake her up, nothing will. It’s weird. I keep praying and then I yell at her. Over and over…”
“Me too. She has to wake up for this beautiful boy. I keep telling her over and over.”
“Keep me in the loop.”
“Will do.”
“Pray.”
“Anything?”
“Um.. They didn’t think she would make it through the night. Her heart stopped twice. She went through 20 pints of blood. She’s bleeding from everywhere. They’re worried about neurological damage and they think they know what’s happening.”
“Do I want to know?”
“Let me find the paper. It’s something called Amniotic Fluid Embolism.”
“Aw shit. I googled it. This is bad, very bad. Beyond bad.”
“If you got any in with any deity, use it.”
